What a treat! I get a text from Rich on the train – ‘how about Silo tonight?’ – my only answer: YUM! No need to ask what I want on my pizza, it’s always the same; thin crust, New York cut (apparently, that means ‘in wedges’) Reuben pizza.
????
Yup, you read correctly: pizza with corned beef, sauerkraut, swiss cheese and Russian dressing. You will also not believe how incredibly good it is!
I was introduced to the wonders of The Silo six or seven years ago while on a photoshoot in Lake Forest. One of the shooters had grown up in the neighborhood and recommended we try them for lunch. I ordered a rueben sandwich and was hooked – they dust the sandwich with cheese before grilling. Visiting for lunch on a Saturday, I discovered the possibility of having this tasty treat as a pizza. Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.
Their more traditional pizzas are good as well (Rich is quite fond of their thick crust); and they do a very nice pork tenderloin sandwich. We haven’t tried the ribs or chicken; we just don’t go there often enough to explore the options.
I will note that this isn’t your bargain pizza place – our two specialty pizzas last night came in around $50 – but it is a treat, and there is plenty left over for lunch and snacks and just plain nibbling.
I haven’t strayed from the Reuben pizza, tho’ I was thinking last night about how nicely their lovely thin crust would hold my fave regular ‘za – pepperoni, black olive and onion. Oh well, maybe next time.
